Terms of Service

Welcome to OChemNinja. These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the OChemNinja websites, practice tools, and related services (collectively, the "Service"), operated by Adam M. Azman, Ph.D. ("OChemNinja," "we," "us," or "our"). By accessing or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
1. The Service
OChemNinja provides interactive organic chemistry practice tools, including hand-drawn structure input, automatically generated practice problems, and instant automated feedback. The Service is provided for educational purposes only. It is a study aid — not a substitute for your course, your instructor, or your own judgment, and we make no guarantee that feedback, grading, or generated content is error-free.
2. Acceptable Use
You agree to use the Service only for lawful, educational purposes. You will not:
- Interfere with, disrupt, or attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service, its servers, or its data;
- Use automated tools (bots, scrapers, bulk requests) to access the Service in a way that burdens or degrades it;
- Attempt to reverse engineer, copy, or resell the Service or its problem-generation systems, except as permitted by applicable open-source licenses;
- Use the Service to violate any academic integrity policy that applies to you;
- Submit content that is unlawful, harmful, or infringes the rights of others.
3. Usage Data & Telemetry
To make the Service better — in particular, to improve how accurately the drawing canvas recognizes and interprets hand-drawn chemical structures — we collect telemetry about how you use the Service, and by using the Service you consent to this collection. This includes, for example: the ink strokes you draw, how the recognizer interpreted them, the problems you attempted and the answers you gave, whether attempts were graded correct or incorrect, your input modality (pen, finger, touchpad, or mouse), and coarse technical information about your browser and device.
This telemetry is pseudonymous: we do not collect your name, email address, login, IP address, or precise location as part of it. The only persistent identifier is a random key stored in your browser's local storage, which identifies a browser profile rather than a person. You can reset it at any time by clearing your browser's site data for OChemNinja.
We use this data to refine the drawing recognizer, fix bugs, improve problem generation and grading, and understand how the Service is used. We do not sell this data or use it for third-party advertising.
4. Intellectual Property
The Service — including the drawing canvas, recognizers, problem generators, graders, site design, and all generated content — is owned by OChemNinja and protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the Service for personal, educational purposes. Chemical structure handling is powered by OpenChemLib (Idorsia Pharmaceuticals Ltd., BSD 3-Clause license), and some pages use jQuery and jQuery UI (OpenJS Foundation, MIT license); those components remain governed by their respective licenses.
5. Your Content
You retain any rights you may have in the drawings and answers you submit. By submitting them, you grant OChemNinja a worldwide, royalty-free license to store, reproduce, analyze, and create derivative works from that content for the purposes of operating, evaluating, and improving the Service (including training and testing the recognizer against real student ink, as described in Section 3).
6. Disclaimers
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR THAT AUTOMATED GRADING AND FEEDBACK WILL ALWAYS BE CORRECT.
7. Limitation of Liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, OCHEMNINJA AND ITS CREATOR SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF DATA, GRADES, PROFITS, OR GOODWILL, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF (OR INABILITY TO USE) THE SERVICE. IN NO EVENT SHALL OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATED TO THE SERVICE EXCEED FIFTY U.S. DOLLARS (US $50) OR THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE PAST TWELVE MONTHS, WHICHEVER IS GREATER.
8. Termination
We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service at any time, with or without notice, for any conduct that we reasonably believe violates these Terms or is otherwise harmful to the Service or its users. You may stop using the Service at any time. Sections 3–7 and 9–10 survive termination.
9. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will revise the effective date above. Material changes will be reasonably highlighted on the Service. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
10. General
These Terms constitute the entire agreement between you and OChemNinja regarding the Service. If any provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in full effect. Our failure to enforce any right is not a waiver of it. These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Ohio, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
